International Regular Expressions Day

It's 1st June 2010 today, and that means we're celebrating for the third time the annual International Regular Expressions Day.

Ben Nadel kicked off this event two years ago, in order to promote the use of Regex, especially amongst those who might consider them something scary and obscure.

As before, Ben is running a contest, this year's prizes being some O'Reily Regex books and IIS Mod-Rewrite Pro licenses.

Entry to the competition requires writing some code, and the deadline is today, so if you're interested then hurry up and read the blog entry to find out more.

Happy Regex Day!

Welcome to the Isle

This is my new and improved weblog, where I will be posting on a large assortment of topics which I hope you will find interesting.
All of the old blog messages have been ported across, and re-catalogued into more useful groupings.

For anyone wishing to read posts only on particular areas, there are three sub-blogs available, which filter the messages from this main blog according to their respective focus. Combined with the ability to subscribe to feeds for individual or multiple tags, it should be easy to get at only the content you wish to read. And to follow all the messages, you can simply read just the main blog.

Currently, everything is still rather basic, but over the next few months I will be adding to, extending and improving the various features that are available, and I welcome any feedback you might have.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your stay, and please feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Mount & Blade - A time of war, a game of legend!

This weekend Taleworlds have finally released v1.003 of Mount & Blade, an excellent game based primarily around mounted combat.

The game has been developed in shareware form for many years, it has a large following of fans and numerous graphical and gameplay mods, and earlier this year it was picked up by publishers Paradox Interactive, through whom it is now available to buy online and in shops.

Anyone who paid for a shareware version is entitiled to this full release at no extra cost.

Set in the mediaeval world of Calradia, Mount & Blade is an open-ended role-playing game which gives you a lot of freedom - there is no set storyline, and you can choose to do pretty much as you please.

My Edinburgh Adventure

From the 26th May to 2nd June I'll be in Edinburgh, exploring the city and surrounding areas, and taking plenty of photographs. At the end of the week I'll be attending Scotch on the Rocks, an annual ColdFusion developer conference.

Each day I'll be updating this entry with what I've been doing, as well as including some of the photos I've taken.

Update, Sunday 10th June: Photos Available
I've put a selection of photos into an online gallery, available at photos.bpsite.net/edinburgh

Project:Photon - Part III

Things are slowly starting to get going now, I think I'm settled on the software/tools I'm going to use, and just need to test that they'll do what I need, and then get things properly setup.

Project:Photon

Project:Photon is an attempt to build a small and silent device to fulfill two main requirements. The first is for a reliable high-capacity storage device for my photographs and other valuable data, with integrated backup routines to help protect against unintended deletions. The second is for a personal web development server, which will be used for testing websites and hosting personal web applications on my home network.

Whilst it is possible to buy commercial products which allow you to attach hard-drives via a network, and also have an integrated web server, none of the NAS devices on offer managed to work in precisely the way I want. So I figured I'd make my own.

P.. P.. P.. Pickup a Powerpack

If you've been following my Macbook 3G entry, you'll know that to get my Vodafone datacard running in the u132 PCMCIA->USB adapter, I need an external power supply - the 5V/500mA supplied by the USB port is not sufficient to get the datacard running with.

My solution up until now has been a standard 6V/1A mains power adapter - clearly not a useful solution for a laptop. I Froogled around and found plenty of portable chargers for mobile phones and similar, but nothing that clearly supported the type of connection that my u132 has.

So, the obvious solution: I make my own.

3G Broadband for my MacBook Pro

For over two years now I haven't had personal broadband Internet access. In April I got an XDA Mini S, which promoted me from horrificly basic WAP to painful GPRS access. It was a huge freedom being able to access the web over the weekend, but it is slow, expensive, and there is an appauling choice of browsers for Windows Mobile.
My insanity has been held at bay by being able to stay after work and catch up on things, but I've still not been able to play online games, download large files, listen to streaming music, and so on.

Soon most of this will be over, when I finally get broadband access, via high-speed 3G from Vodafone. It will still be relatively expensive and I still won't be able to download large files, but at least I can turn images back on, browse more than three pages at a time, and not have to wait for ages just for a simple page to load.
